Meet the team

Say hello to our dedicated Bud and Learning team who work hard both behind the scenes and out on the road travelling across Scotland sharing the story of the Poppy.

Book Bud

Kerry Crichton

Deputy Head of Learning and Outreach

Favourite feature on Bud? In Flanders Field poem projection with audio effects.  It makes me emotional every time I stand and watch it through and reflect on the words.

Favourite place you have visited on Bud? Ben Wyvis Primary & Nursery School, Highlands.  A lovely school with a fabulous warm welcome from all the staff and pupils.

Interesting fact about yourself. Over the last ten years, I have visited schools in every Local Authority in Scotland. It’s always a joy to meet learners and practitioners from schools of ten pupils to 2,000, with every visit I learn something new.

Laura O’Neill

Learning and Outreach Officer

Favourite feature on Bud? The veteran factory workers interviews – I love seeing the people behind the Poppy.

Favourite place you have visited on Bud? Mull and all it's little schools. The countryside and the warm welcome we received was wonderful!

Interesting fact about yourself. I served as an Aircraft Engineer in the Royal Navy for 26 years. At age 32 I was the second-ever female to take a lynx aircraft flight to sea as the Senior Maintenance Rating.

Catherine Provan

Learning and Outreach Officer

Favourite feature on Bud? The Talking Portraits where Lady Haig, a Poppyscotland volunteer, and two veterans from the Poppy Factory come to life to interact with each other and explain the history of Poppyscotland.

Favourite place you have visited on Bud? If I had to pick somewhere it would be our visit to the Isle of Lewis. It was my first time on the island and it was wonderful to visit the schools as well as see some of the sights.

Interesting fact about yourself. I once flew an RAF glider at JSSU Cyprus when my husband was stationed there and I was on holiday visiting him. It was a bit more nerve-wracking than driving Little Bud!

Colin Telfer

Bud Driver

Favourite feature on Bud? Hard to pick but it would be the Virtual Reality headsets. We showed a veteran who didn’t speak about his experiences but after hearing others talk on the VR he opened up. His wife was very surprised!

Favourite place you have visited on Bud? The Isle of Lewis – we went to the Iolaire Memorial which was emotional due to the tragic deaths. On the same trip, we went to Laxdale Primary School, where the kids had 2 or 3 hours to practice In Flanders Fields for us to video, they were fantastic, they did really well in the short time they had, I felt that this is what the Project is all about.

Interesting fact about yourself. I worked with adults and children with additional needs taking them to adult training centers and school. I also worked with all ages in the community when I worked in a Community Centre that was based in a deprived area.

John McCrory

Favourite feature on Bud? The transformer function, Virtual Reality head-sets, kettle and the biscuit shelf!

Favourite place you have visited on Bud? Montrose Air Station Open Day August 2019 – Bud was right on the runway!

Interesting fact about yourself. From the age of 16 – 24 I served a mechanical engineering apprenticeship at Barr and Stroud Anniesland making laser rangefinders for tanks and submarine periscopes.

Sandra Comrie

Bud Volunteer Support Coordinator

Favourite feature on Bud? The Talking Head Portraits.

Favourite place you have visited on Bud? My favourite place with Bud was in Edinburgh at the pipe band championships.

Interesting fact about yourself. I learned so much more being on Bud than I ever did in the classroom.

Sophie McWilliam

Bud Coordinator

Favourite feature on Bud? The poppy making station. I think it’s brilliant that every poppy made on Bud is completely unique to the person who made it.

Dream destination to visit on Bud? I would love to visit some of the Scottish islands such as Mull or Bute with Bud, having not been there before myself. It would be interesting to work out the travel logistics of getting Bud there and navigating the island roads.

Interesting fact about yourself. I am new to the Bud Coordinator role, but I previously worked in the Fundraising department at Poppyscotland. Prior to that I worked in the events industry for over 10 years, so I am used to working out tricky schedules and dealing with any last-minute changes which keep us on our toes!

Headshot Maddy

Maddy Weir

Learning Programme Officer

Favourite feature on Bud? I love the projection of the hands making the poppies on the table. It was lovely to see learners copying the process to assemble their own poppies.

Dream destination to visit with Bud? I would love to travel with Bud to Barra. It would be great to take Bud to somewhere so remote, plus I would love to see the beautiful beaches!

Interesting fact about yourself. I was a primary school teacher for around seven years. I worked with some fantastic classes and loved my time as a teacher! My favourite things to teach were anything history related, science and outdoor learning.
